Mining UGC

Mining for UGC is much easier than mining for bitcoin, or is it? If you are in a small community on a Facebook group finding User Generated Content may be difficult and would take much work to find UGC because of limited content. Two types of UGC mining exist, and I will use this example to explain them.

If you were to take a small sifter and go to a mountain river in California and sift through the river gravel, you might find some gold nuggets. But the real gold comes from deep mines requiring large machines.

UGC mining can be the same way. A small Facebook group manager or a small business owner may. Use a hashtag or many to search social media to find small nuggets to put on their social media accounts.

Larger businesses and social media networks will use data mining to search through billions of words and photos on multiple networks to discover UGC. Again, this type of UGC mining requires many resources. But companies exist to assist you in collecting UGC.

On the other hand, creating UGC using a creative campaign will yield great results. The key is creating using emotional topics with a loyal fan base. Imagine having thousands of loyal consumers who love your product, many of whom are creative, producing ads for your product. All you have to do is give them a chance. But, don’t make the rules too stiff, or you will reduce their creativity.

How do you do it? Simply ask them a question or pose a challenge and give them credit? Sometimes a free product may be warranted. But in today’s social media world, where consumers follow their brands. There was a time in the 20th century when advertising focused on sales, and consumers avoided brand commercials and advertising. But now, people enjoy spending money and time on their brands as advertising has shifted to brand awareness.
